Overview

Flat mending plates in cold-rolled DC01 mild steel, zinc-plated for everyday corrosion resistance, formed as straight, low-profile repair and reinforcement brackets for general woodworking, furniture and shelving joints. Unlike an angled corner brace, these plates fix flat across a joint, seam or split, spreading the fixing evenly along both sides of the repair rather than concentrating it at a single corner.

The uniform 13mm (0.51in) width and 2.0mm (0.08in) gauge keep the plate slim enough to sit flush against most timber surfaces without adding bulk, so it doesn't stand proud once fitted or foul a drawer, door or adjoining panel. That same width and gauge is held constant across every length in the range, so the only variable from one size to the next is how far the plate reaches - useful when you're matching a plate to a joint by eye, since the profile you see in one size is the profile you get in all of them. The zinc-plated finish gives reliable everyday corrosion resistance, protecting the bare steel beneath without the thicker build-up of a heavier galvanised coating, which suits a plate intended to sit unobtrusively on furniture and fitted joinery.

Fixing holes are pre-drilled and countersunk (approximately 6.5mm/0.26in diameter, 90° countersink) at each end of the plate, sized to accept standard countersunk-head wood screws for a flush finish once fitted - no marking out, drilling or countersinking of your own needed on site. Because the holes are set and countersunk at manufacture rather than by hand, their spacing and depth stay consistent from plate to plate of the same size, which matters where more than one plate is being fitted to the same piece of furniture and you want a uniform result.

Key Features

  • Cold-rolled DC01 mild steel construction with a zinc-plated finish for everyday corrosion resistance
  • Slim, low-profile design - a uniform 13mm (0.51in) width and 2.0mm (0.08in) gauge across every size, so the plate sits flush without adding bulk
  • Pre-drilled and countersunk fixing holes (approx. 6.5mm/0.26in diameter, 90° countersink) at each end, ready for standard countersunk-head wood screws
  • Straight, flat profile spreads the fixing across the joint rather than concentrating it at one point, unlike an angled corner brace
  • Four lengths available, from 36.5mm (1.44in) up to 96.5mm (3.80in), to suit narrow rails through to wider joints and gaps
  • Lightweight per plate, from 6g (0.21oz) on the shortest size up to 18g (0.63oz) on the longest
  • Countersunk holes seat screw heads flush with the plate face for a neat, snag-free finish once installed

Installation Guidance

Position the plate centrally over the joint, seam or crack you need to reinforce, with the pre-drilled holes evenly spread across both sides of the repair, then mark through each hole onto the timber beneath. Fix with countersunk-head wood screws (not included) sized to suit the approximately 6.5mm (0.26in) hole diameter, driving each screw home so the head seats flush with the plate face rather than proud of it. On denser hardwoods, a small pilot hole at each marked point will help the screw bite cleanly and seat flush without splitting the timber around it.

Choose the shorter 36.5mm or 56.5mm sizes for narrow rails and slim joints where space is limited, and the longer 76.5mm or 96.5mm sizes where you need to bridge a wider gap or span across two adjoining timber sections for a more secure fix. Where a joint is under more strain, or where you want extra reassurance on a load-bearing repair, fitting a plate to both faces of the timber - front and back of the joint - spreads the fixing further than a single plate alone.

Typical Applications

Because the plate is straight rather than angled, it earns its place anywhere a joint needs reinforcing along a flat plane rather than across a corner - a split running along the grain, a loosened butt joint, or a rail that's begun to work free of its fixings. With four lengths to choose from, it covers everything from small, delicate repairs to wider joints needing a longer span:

  • Repairing and reinforcing domestic furniture joints - chairs, tables, desks, bed frames, dressers and chests where a joint has loosened, split or needs extra support
  • Strengthening shelf and cabinet joints in fitted or freestanding furniture, where a slim plate is needed that won't foul the adjoining panel
  • Joining timber battens and general carpentry sections where a flat, low-profile fixing suits the job better than a bulkier corner bracket
  • Splinting cracked, split or loose sections of wood furniture - fixing the plate across the damaged section to hold it together and stop the split spreading further
  • General workshop and joinery repairs wherever a straight, flush-fitting mending plate suits the joint better than an angled brace
  • Indoor furniture and fitted joinery generally, where the zinc-plated finish gives everyday protection
