Overview

Wing nuts to DIN 315, American form: white zinc plated steel butterfly nuts that tighten and release by hand. Two broad, rounded, ergonomic wings give enough leverage to draw a fastening up firmly, or free it again, without a spanner, socket or other tool. Eight metric sizes from M3 to M16, in packs of 2, 10, 20 or 50.

How It Works
Thread the wing nut onto a bolt, machine screw or threaded rod of the same size and turn the wings by hand. The rounded wings give a firm, comfortable grip and a secure hold for repeated hand tightening, even when wearing gloves or working in awkward, restricted spaces, and the joint stays a stable, reliable threaded connection. Where a fixing is assembled and taken apart often, hand operation saves significant time. Thread pitch, wing span and nut height increase in step with thread size, so the same design covers everything from small electronics and model-making fasteners through to substantial machine and equipment fastenings.

Key Features

  • Tool-free: tightens and releases by hand, with no spanner or socket needed for normal use
  • Rounded, ergonomic wings: a comfortable grip and secure hold, including while wearing gloves
  • Stable, reliable threaded connection with easy hand operation
  • White zinc plated steel: anti-corrosion coating for general-purpose corrosion resistance and protection against rust, suited to workshop, garage, automotive and outdoor use
  • Made to DIN 315 American form, giving consistent, predictable dimensions and thread engagement across the size range
  • Wide size range from M3 up to M16, spanning light electronics and model-making work through to heavier machine and equipment fixings
  • Thread pitch matched to standard metric threads at every size, from 0.5mm at M3 up to 2.0mm at M16
  • Fits directly onto the equivalent metric bolt, machine screw or threaded rod, for example an M6 wing nut onto an M6 thread at 1.0mm pitch

Typical Applications

A tool-free fit and a wide size range make these wing nuts suited to hand-adjustable fixings wherever tool-free quick release is required:

  • Woodworking jigs, workbenches and sled fences, where a fence, stop or guide needs to be repositioned and re-locked repeatedly between cuts without breaking rhythm to find a spanner
  • Access panels, guards, control panels and inspection covers on machinery and equipment, so panels can be opened for maintenance, cleaning or inspection and closed again securely, entirely by hand
  • Battery terminals and similar electrical connections that need frequent, tool-free access; the M3 size in particular suits small terminal posts and general electronics or model-making assemblies
  • Flat-pack furniture and shelving assembly, where fixings benefit from being adjustable and re-tightenable by hand as the item settles in or is moved
  • Sports and recreational equipment that is set up, adjusted and packed away by hand
  • Quick temporary connections in construction and steel structures
  • General DIY, garden and workshop fixings of all kinds, wherever finger-tight adjustment is more practical, and faster, than reaching for a spanner
  • Outdoor equipment and fittings, where the zinc plating protects against rust and helps the nut keep turning freely by hand

Installation Guidance

Match the wing nut to the diameter and thread pitch of the bolt, machine screw or threaded rod being used, for example an M6 wing nut pairs with an M6 thread at 1.0mm pitch, and an M12 wing nut with an M12 thread at 1.75mm pitch, as set out in the size table above.

  • Thread the nut onto the fastener and turn the wings by hand until the joint is snug
  • No spanner or socket is needed for normal tightening or loosening; the wide wing span provides enough leverage on its own
  • To free a nut that has been tightened hard, a light tap on the wings with a mallet, or a pair of pliers used to assist the first quarter-turn, will usually break it loose before hand-turning takes over again

Common Questions

Which size do I need?
Match the wing nut to the thread of your bolt or threaded rod: an M6 wing nut fits an M6 thread, 8mm wing nuts fit an M8 thread and 10mm wing nuts an M10 thread. For small threads there are 4mm wing nuts (M4) and butterfly nuts M3, the smallest size. The table above lists the pitch, wing span and height of every size.

Do I need a tool to fit them?
No. The wings give enough leverage to tighten and loosen the nut by hand.

What size is the M10 wing nut?
M10 has a 1.5mm thread pitch, a 37.0mm wing span and a 20.0mm height.

What pack sizes are available?
Every size comes in packs of 2, 10, 20 or 50 wing nuts.
