Overview

Pyramid-topped fence post caps pressed from 1.0mm (0.04in) galvanised steel, sized to fit directly over 70mm x 70mm (2.76 x 2.76in) sawn timber posts and finished with a genuine hot-dip zinc coating for long-term weather protection outdoors. Each cap is designed as a simple, permanent finish for a post top: it fits straight over the post with no cutting, shaping or extra preparation needed, and no adhesive is used.

The hot-dip galvanising process fully immerses each cap in molten zinc, coating every surface, inside and out, in a thick, continuous protective layer. Because the coating covers the whole cap rather than just the outer face, there are no thin spots in the corrosion protection, even at cut edges and around the pre-drilled fixing point. This gives significantly more robust, longer-lasting protection than a thinner electro-galvanised or zinc-plated finish, which is why hot-dip galvanising is generally the finish specified for fittings that are fixed once and then left exposed to the weather for years at a time.

The four-sided pyramid profile does more than finish the post off neatly: its sloped faces shed rainwater away from the post top instead of letting it collect on a flat surface. Standing water on an exposed, cut post end is the main cause of splitting, swelling and rot in untreated or uncapped timber, so directing that water away at the point where it would otherwise sit is the cap’s main job. Between the galvanised finish protecting the cap itself and the pyramid shape protecting the timber beneath it, the two features work together to add years to the working life of an ordinary fence or gate post.

Key Features

  • Genuine hot-dip galvanised finish: the cap is fully immersed in molten zinc so every surface, inside and out, carries a thick, continuous protective layer, including the cut edges and the fixing hole
  • Pressed from 1.0mm (0.04in) galvanised steel, giving a rigid cap that holds its shape and resists denting or crushing in day-to-day outdoor use
  • Sized to fit 70mm x 70mm (2.76 x 2.76in) timber posts, one of the most widely used fence and gate post sizes, so it suits a standard post without any adaptation
  • Four-sided pyramid top sheds rainwater away from the post rather than letting it pool on a flat surface, protecting the timber below from splitting, swelling and rot at the post end
  • Lightweight at just 0.08kg (2.82oz) per cap, so it adds negligible load to the post it is protecting and is easy to handle and fit by hand
  • Pre-drilled fixing point built into the cap allows it to be fitted quickly and securely with a single nail or screw
  • Fits straight over a square-cut post end with no adhesive and no additional post preparation, cutting or shaping required
  • Galvanised surface takes paint well once fitted, so the cap can be over-painted to match any existing fence or garden colour scheme

Typical Applications

The cap suits any application built around a standard 70mm x 70mm timber post where the post top is left exposed to the weather:

  • Garden and boundary fence posts: capping the exposed end grain along a full fence run so rainwater has nowhere to sit on any of the post tops
  • Gate posts, which are frequently left taller than the fence panels either side of them and so have a top that is fully exposed to the weather
  • Pergola and arbour uprights, where the post often continues above the level of the roof beams or cross-members and is left with an exposed cut end
  • Trellis posts supporting climbing plants, where the post needs to stay structurally sound for as long as the planting is established against it
  • Any 70mm x 70mm sawn softwood post, whether it is being capped as part of a new fence or gate installation, or fitted as a retrofit upgrade to an existing post that has been left uncapped

Installation Guidance

Fitting needs no special tools or preparation:

  • Fits directly over the square-cut top of a 70mm x 70mm (2.76 x 2.76in) timber post, no cutting, sanding or extra shaping needed before fitting
  • Secure the cap in place with a single suitable nail or screw through the pre-drilled fixing point
  • No adhesive or additional post preparation is required
  • Once fitted, the galvanised surface can be over-painted to match any fence or garden colour scheme
