Overview

These E6013 mild steel arc welding electrodes are classified E 38 0 RC 11 to EN ISO 2560-A (AWS A5.1: E6013), the standard general-purpose consumable for manual metal arc (MMA/stick) welding of mild and low-carbon structural and fabrication steels.

The rutile-cellulosic flux coating is the defining feature of this electrode type: it produces a very active, intensive arc with easy striking and re-striking, good penetration, and a self-releasing slag that lifts away cleanly from the weld as it cools rather than needing to be chipped off. Deposited beads are smooth and slightly convex, blending into the base metal without undercutting. The coating is reasonably tolerant of light surface rust, mill scale, and galvanised, primed or painted steel, and the electrodes run on AC and DC power in either polarity, so they suit the widest range of stick welders, including basic transformer sets with a lower open-circuit voltage.

Usable in all welding positions, including vertical-down, this electrode type is especially suited to tack welds, root runs and short repair welds thanks to its easy arc control and strong gap-bridging ability – useful for thinner sheet (under around 5mm) as well as general fabrication work. Deposited weld metal typically has a carbon-manganese composition with a yield strength of around 400MPa (58,000psi), tensile strength of around 510MPa (74,000psi) and elongation of around 28%, giving consistent, reliable welds across the size range.

Key Features

  • Classified E6013 (E 38 0 RC 11 to EN ISO 2560-A; AWS A5.1: E6013) – a widely recognised, general-purpose electrode standard for mild steel MMA welding
  • Rutile-cellulosic flux coating gives a very active, intensive arc that strikes and re-strikes easily, even on basic AC transformer welders
  • Self-releasing slag lifts cleanly away from the weld as it cools, cutting down on chipping and clean-up between passes
  • Runs on AC or DC power in either polarity, for compatibility across the widest range of stick welding sets
  • Usable in all welding positions including vertical-down, with strong gap-bridging ability on imperfect joint fit-up
  • Reasonably tolerant of light surface rust, mill scale, and galvanised, primed or painted steel
  • Deposited weld metal strength: yield around 400MPa (58,000psi), tensile around 510MPa (74,000psi), elongation around 28%
  • Supplied in 8 diameter and length combinations, from 2.0mm x 300mm (0.08in x 11.8in) up to 5.0mm x 450mm (0.20in x 17.7in), to match the job in hand

Specification

Diameter Length Recommended current
2.0mm (0.08in) 300mm (11.8in) 50-70A
2.5mm (0.10in) 350mm (13.8in) 60-100A
3.2mm (0.13in) 350mm (13.8in) 80-150A
3.2mm (0.13in) 450mm (17.7in) 80-150A
4.0mm (0.16in) 350mm (13.8in) 100-200A
4.0mm (0.16in) 450mm (17.7in) 100-200A
5.0mm (0.20in) 350mm (13.8in) 150-290A
5.0mm (0.20in) 450mm (17.7in) 150-290A

Current ranges are a general starting guide for this electrode classification – always fine-tune within the range to suit base metal thickness, joint type and welding position, favouring the lower end for vertical-down work and thinner sheet.

Welding Guidance

  • Match diameter to the job: smaller diameters (2.0-2.5mm) suit thin sheet, tack welds and root passes, while larger diameters (4.0-5.0mm) suit thicker sections and give faster deposition
  • Strike the arc with a scratch or tap start and hold a short, steady arc length for a stable, controlled bead
  • The self-releasing slag lifts away on its own as the weld cools – only light brushing is normally needed to clear any remaining residue before the next pass or a finishing coat
  • Stay within the recommended current range for the diameter in use (see Specification table above), favouring the lower end for vertical-down work and thinner sheet, and the higher end for thicker sections and flat-position runs

Typical Applications

With an easy-to-strike, all-position arc and reasonable tolerance for less-than-pristine surface preparation, this electrode type suits a wide range of general fabrication, repair and maintenance welding, including:

  • General steel fabrication and workshop repair jobs, from one-off fixes to small production runs
  • Structural steelwork and site welding, including vertical-down passes on installed sections
  • Agricultural and site machinery repair, where reliable arc starting on basic power sources matters
  • Trailer and vehicle chassis repair, thanks to the electrode's gap-bridging ability on uneven or worn joints
  • Gate, railing and fence construction, including thinner box section and sheet steel under around 5mm
  • Tack welding and root passes ahead of a fill pass, where a hot, easy-starting arc speeds up setup
  • Outdoor and field repair work on steel with light surface rust, mill scale, or galvanised, primed or painted coatings, where full surface preparation isn't practical
  • Any workshop or site job needing a versatile, all-position electrode that runs reliably on both AC and DC welding sets
