Overview

Galvanised steel wire rope thimble to DIN 6899, form B, a curved, teardrop-shaped fitting made to sit inside a rope loop (eye splice) and protect the rope from wear while maintaining its natural bend radius wherever it connects to a shackle, hook or ring.

Without a thimble, a rope loop under load gets pinched into a tight radius against whatever it's attached to, accelerating wear and weakening the rope at that point. The thimble's curved groove spreads the load evenly around the loop and keeps its shape open and round rather than crushed flat, so the rope holds its strength and lasts longer at the termination point.

DIN 6899 covers two forms of wire rope thimble. Form B (this one) is the standard light-pattern thimble used for typical wire rope work; form A is the heavier pattern used with larger chain and heavier rigging gear. Made from galvanised steel, this thimble suits outdoor and general engineering environments where corrosion resistance matters.

Each size in the range is proportioned specifically to its rope diameter: overall length, eye width and eye length all increase together as the rope gets thicker, rather than a handful of eye sizes being shared across multiple rope diameters. That means the eye on a 6mm thimble is genuinely different from the eye on an 8mm or 10mm thimble, even where the difference looks small on paper, so it pays to check the dimensions below rather than assume nearby sizes are interchangeable. Metric measurements are given throughout, with an approximate imperial (inch) equivalent alongside each one for cross-referencing against imperial-spec rope or fittings.

Key Features

  • Manufactured to DIN 6899, form B, the standard light-pattern wire rope thimble profile, as distinct from the heavier form A pattern used with larger chain and heavier rigging.
  • Galvanised steel construction resists corrosion, making it suitable for outdoor and general engineering use.
  • Curved groove profile spreads load evenly around the rope loop, preventing the rope from being pinched or crushed flat under tension.
  • Protects the rope from wear and abrasion at the eye, and helps maintain the rope's natural bend radius so it keeps its strength.
  • Available across rope diameters from 3mm to 20mm (≈0.12″–0.79″), with overall length and eye dimensions scaled to match each individual rope size rather than shared across sizes.
  • Sits inside the rope loop itself rather than being a separate add-on fitting, compatible with standard wire rope clamps (such as our matching DIN 741 clamps) or a swaged/spliced termination.
  • Simple sizing rule: match the thimble to your rope diameter first, then size any connecting shackle or hook to the thimble's eye dimensions, not the rope diameter alone.
  • Every metric size is listed with its approximate imperial equivalent, making it straightforward to cross-reference against inch-spec rope or fittings.

A 20mm (≈0.79″) size is also available, sized in line with the range above.

Typical Applications

  • Wire rope eye terminations: protecting the loop where it's spliced or clamped around a shackle, hook, ring or anchor point, so the rope isn't taking the full load against bare metal.
  • General rigging: anywhere a wire rope needs a durable, low-wear loop rather than a bare bend against a connecting fitting.
  • General lifting applications: slings, lifting rope assemblies and tie-down loops where the rope eye takes repeated load and repeated handling.
  • Fencing and balustrade wire installations: looping tensioned wire rope around posts, uprights or fixing points without crushing the wire out of shape at the anchor point.
  • Agricultural and general engineering rigging: wherever a wire rope loop is formed and needs protecting from wear and abrasion over repeated use.
  • Anywhere a rope loop needs protecting from wear and abrasion, and needs to keep its round shape rather than being pulled flat under tension.

Installation Guidance

Fit the thimble as part of forming the rope termination itself, not after the loop is already closed:

  • Loop the rope around the thimble's outer groove so the thimble sits inside the loop, following its curved profile.
  • Secure the loop with wire rope clamps (see our matching DIN 741 clamps) or a swaged/spliced termination; the thimble isn't a standalone fitting, it stays inside the finished loop and is held in place by the termination itself.
  • Match the thimble size to your rope diameter first; sizes are not generally interchangeable between adjacent rope diameters, as both the groove and eye dimensions change together.
  • Once the loop is formed, choose any connecting shackle, hook or ring to suit the thimble's eye width and eye length, not the rope diameter alone.
  • On rigging and lifting applications in particular, check the loop periodically for wear or deformation, since the thimble's role is precisely to take that wear so the rope itself doesn't have to.
