Overview

Galvanised steel U-bolt wire rope clamps manufactured to DIN 741, the recognised specification for this style of U-bolt wire rope clip, used to terminate and secure wire rope by clamping a loop back onto itself. Each clamp is formed from a U-bolt, a grooved saddle plate and two nuts; tightening the nuts draws the saddle down onto the rope, pinching the standing and dead ends of the rope together to hold the loop closed. As a DIN-specification part, the U-bolt, saddle and nuts for each size are dimensioned as a matched set, rather than needing to be sourced separately and paired by eye. This type of termination is typically formed around a thimble (sold separately), which sits inside the loop to protect the rope from sharp bending and keep the loop shape true.

Each clamp size in the range is matched to a specific U-bolt thread diameter, so the clamp is sized correctly for the rope diameter it is intended to grip. Using the correct clamp size for your rope - rather than simply "a similar size" from a mixed set - is what gives the finished joint its intended holding strength: an oversized or undersized clamp will not seat correctly on the rope, and can damage the outer strands or fail to grip properly rather than clamping cleanly. The galvanised steel construction is intended to give the clamp the corrosion resistance to sit outdoors long-term, since wire rope terminations of this kind are very often part of an outdoor fencing, balustrade or rigging run that is exposed to the weather for the life of the installation.

Key Features

  • Manufactured to DIN 741, the recognised standard for U-bolt wire rope clips, so dimensions and thread sizes are matched consistently across the whole range
  • Galvanised steel construction for corrosion resistance in outdoor rigging, fencing and agricultural environments
  • Eight matched sizes spanning rope diameters from 3mm (≈0.12″) up to 14mm (≈0.55″), with U-bolt threads from M4 up to M10
  • Simple bolt-up fitting - the U-bolt and grooved saddle clamp the loop shut with two nuts, with no swaging or specialist crimping tools needed
  • Size-matched by design, so each clamp grips its intended rope diameter correctly rather than a "one size fits most" compromise
  • Designed to be paired with a matching wire rope thimble (sold separately) to protect the rope inside the loop and keep its shape under load
  • Reusable, bolted connection - clamps can be checked and re-tightened after the rope has settled under initial load, rather than being a one-shot fitting like a swaged ferrule
  • Compact, lightweight hardware that adds minimal bulk to the finished loop compared with the rope and thimble it is fitted to

Typical Applications

Wire rope terminations and loops are the core use for this clamp range, wherever a length of wire rope needs to be secured back on itself to form a fixed eye or loop rather than a fixed, non-adjustable end fitting. That covers a wide spread of jobs across the sizes offered:

  • General rigging work, forming a clamped loop termination on a wire rope run
  • Fencing and balustrade wire tensioning, where the clamped loop anchors the tensioned wire run at each end or fitting point
  • Playground and agricultural fencing, for securing and tensioning wire runs that see repeated loading and need to be checked over time
  • General cable securing around the workshop, garden or yard, wherever a loop-back termination is the practical way to finish a wire rope end

Because the joint is tightened with nuts rather than fixed in one step, it can be checked and re-tightened after the rope has settled under initial load, as covered under Installation Guidance below - useful wherever a tensioned wire run needs periodic maintenance rather than being installed once and left. Pairing the clamp with a matching wire rope thimble - which sits inside the loop to protect the rope from sharp bending and keep the loop shape true - is the recommended way to finish the termination on any of the applications above.

Installation Guidance

  1. Check the clamp size against the rope diameter before starting, using the table above - the clamp size is not interchangeable between rope diameters, since an oversized or undersized clamp will not seat or grip correctly.
  2. Form the loop around a thimble where one is being used, so the loop holds its shape and the rope is not bent sharply at the fold.
  3. Orient the saddle correctly - the U-shaped part with the flat bearing surface always sits on the standing/live side of the rope (the part under load), never on the dead/tail end being clamped off. The rigging trade shorthand for this is "never saddle a dead horse."
  4. Fit multiple clamps on larger diameters - use at least three clamps per termination, spaced roughly 6-7 rope diameters apart, so the load is shared across the full termination rather than concentrated at a single point.
  5. Tighten evenly so the saddle draws down firmly onto the rope without crushing or damaging the strands.
  6. Re-tighten after first use - once the rope has been loaded, the strands settle slightly, so check and re-tighten each clamp afterwards to keep the termination secure.
