Heavy Duty Zinc-Plated Drive-In Fence Post Support Spike

Overview
Heavy duty drive-in fence post support spike, manufactured from zinc-plated steel, for a durable, all-weather ground anchor that lets you fit a timber post without digging or concreting a footing. Because the fixing is entirely mechanical, there's no mixing, no curing time, and no permanent groundworks to reverse if a post ever needs to be moved or replaced; the spike is driven in and the post is up and secure straight away.
The defining feature of the spike is its tapered, drive-in body: instead of a dug and backfilled hole, the spike is driven straight into soil or lawn using a sledgehammer, mallet or dedicated post-driving tool, while an integral square socket at the top grips the base of a timber post and holds it firmly upright. A drainage opening in the base of the socket helps rainwater escape rather than pooling around the end grain of the post, typically the part of a timber post most vulnerable to water ingress, reducing the risk of rot and helping the timber last longer. The steel body carries a white zinc electroplated finish, giving useful all-round corrosion resistance for general outdoor use in gardens, on decking and around fencing, including the section of the spike that stays below ground once driven in.
Socket wall thickness increases with post size across the range, so the smaller spikes stay neat and unobtrusive for lighter trellis and fencing work, while the largest size is substantial enough for the bigger, heavier posts used in decking sub-frames and gazebo or pergola construction.
Key Features
- Manufactured from zinc-plated steel for durable, all-weather corrosion resistance, including the buried section of the spike
- Drive-in ground anchor: fits a timber fence post securely without digging or concreting a footing
- Tapered spike drives straight into soil or lawn using a sledgehammer, mallet or dedicated post-driving tool
- Integral square socket grips the base of the timber post and holds it firmly upright
- Drainage opening in the base of the socket helps rainwater escape, reducing the risk of rot at the post's vulnerable end grain
- Socket wall thickness increases with post size, giving a firmer grip on the larger, heavier posts in the range
- Available in five sizes, covering post sections from 46 x 46mm up to 121 x 121mm (1.8 x 1.8in to 4.8 x 4.8in)
- White zinc electroplated finish suited to general outdoor use in gardens, on decking and around fencing
- Mechanical, removable fixing: no mixing or curing time, and no concrete footing to break out later if the post is moved

Choose the post fitting size to match the cross-section of your timber post, measured across the flat faces. As a general pattern across the range, the larger the post fitting size, the longer the overall spike, giving proportionally more of the spike's length in the ground to support the extra weight and leverage of a bigger post.
Installation Guidance
Choose the socket size that matches the section of your timber post, then drive the spike vertically into firm, level ground using a sledgehammer, mallet or dedicated post-driving tool. For the firmest fix, choose firm, well-compacted soil or lawn, which gives the best grip. Placing a scrap length of timber or a purpose-made dolly inside the socket while driving helps protect it from distortion, and checking the spike for plumb as you go makes it easier to keep the finished post upright. Once the spike is fully seated, slot the timber post into the socket. Where the socket includes a pre-formed fixing hole, run a suitable screw or coach bolt through the sleeve and into the post for extra security; otherwise the friction fit of the socket, combined with the post's own weight, is normally sufficient to hold it in place. Because the fixing is mechanical rather than set in concrete, the post can also be lifted clear and the spike reused or repositioned later if layouts change.
Typical Applications
The removable, no-concrete fixing makes this spike a practical choice wherever a timber post needs to go in quickly and securely, without the mess, mixing or waiting time that concreting-in involves. Typical uses include:
- Fence posts and fence panels around gardens and boundaries
- Pergola, gazebo and arbour uprights, giving a quick, tidy footing without waiting for concrete to cure
- Decking posts and sub-frame supports
- Shed, outbuilding and summerhouse timber frames
- Garden trellis panels and other timber garden structures
- Timber sign posts and similar single-post installations
- Any project where a timber post needs a secure, removable ground anchor without mixing or curing concrete
