Overview
Heavy-duty D shackles (also known as Dee shackles) manufactured to DIN 82101, each fitted with a screw pin for quick, tool-free attachment and secure locking under load. The galvanised steel body gives reliable corrosion resistance for outdoor and exposed use, while the rounded bow shape is the shackle's defining mechanical feature; it distributes load evenly between the pin and body rather than concentrating it at a single point, so the connection stays secure under working load.
The removable screw pin means the shackle can be connected to or released from chain, rope, webbing or a fixed eye without any special tools: simply unscrew the pin, thread the bow through, and screw the pin back down to lock it in place. Available across nine sizes from M5 to M20 (measured by pin diameter), each size carries its own stated working load limit (WLL), so the shackle can be matched precisely to the job rather than over- or under-specified. As the load increases with each step up in size, the same basic design scales from light-duty M5 shackles suited to small fixings through to heavy-duty M20 shackles rated for over a tonne.
Key Features
- Manufactured to DIN 82101, the recognised dimensional standard for D (Dee) shackles
- Galvanised steel construction for reliable corrosion resistance in outdoor and exposed conditions
- Screw pin lock allows tool-free fitting and removal, with the pin screwing fully home so its shoulder seats against the shackle body
- Rounded bow shape distributes load evenly between pin and body for a secure connection under working load
- Nine sizes from M5 to M20 (pin diameter), each with its own stated working load limit, from 80kg (176lb) at M5 up to 1100kg (2425lb) at M20
- Compatible with chain, rope, webbing or a fixed lifting or securing eye
- Suitable for outdoor rigging, towing and general lifting and securing tasks
Specification
| Size | Pin diameter (d) | Width (B) | Overall length (H) | Working load limit (WLL) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 | 5mm (0.20in) | 10mm (0.39in) | 20mm (0.79in) | 80kg (176lb) |
| M6 | 6mm (0.24in) | 12mm (0.47in) | 24mm (0.94in) | 100kg (220lb) |
| M8 | 8mm (0.31in) | 16mm (0.63in) | 32mm (1.26in) | 200kg (441lb) |
| M10 | 10mm (0.39in) | 20mm (0.79in) | 40mm (1.57in) | 320kg (705lb) |
| M12 | 12mm (0.47in) | 25mm (0.98in) | 48mm (1.89in) | 520kg (1146lb) |
| M14 | 14mm (0.55in) | 28mm (1.10in) | 56mm (2.20in) | 650kg (1433lb) |
| M16 | 16mm (0.63in) | 32mm (1.26in) | 63mm (2.48in) | 800kg (1764lb) |
| M18 | 18mm (0.71in) | 36mm (1.42in) | 71mm (2.80in) | 950kg (2094lb) |
| M20 | 20mm (0.79in) | 38mm (1.50in) | 76mm (2.99in) | 1100kg (2425lb) |
Use the table above to match the shackle to the job: identify the size whose pin diameter and working load limit suit the connection you need, remembering that the stated WLL applies to a straight, in-line pull through the pin, as described in the fitting guidance below. Because the working load limit rises steeply between sizes, from 80kg (176lb) at M5 up to 1100kg (2425lb) at M20, it's straightforward to find a size that comfortably covers the expected load without over-specifying the connection.
Typical Uses
The spread of sizes and working load limits means this range suits tasks from light securing work through to heavier towing and rigging:
- Vehicle recovery and towing: connecting a tow rope, strap or chain to a recovery point, with the larger sizes (M14–M20) suited to the higher loads involved in vehicle recovery and towing.
- Trailer and load securing: anchoring straps, chains or ropes when securing loads on a trailer, flatbed or roof rack.
- Rigging and lifting: connecting slings, chains or ropes to a lifting point where a removable, load-rated connector is needed.
- Fencing and gate hardware: the smaller sizes (M5–M8) are a practical fit for fencing, gate fastenings and other lighter-duty outdoor hardware.
- General outdoor and construction fastening: anywhere a strong, removable connection point is needed between chain, rope, webbing or a fixed eye.
Installation Guidance
Fitting a screw pin D shackle is straightforward and needs no special tools:
- Unscrew the pin fully from the shackle body.
- Pass the bow of the shackle through the chain link, rope eye, webbing loop or fixed lifting or securing point.
- Re-insert the pin and screw it fully home, so the shoulder seats firmly against the shackle body.
- Always load the shackle in line with the pin, never across the bow, and never exceed the stated working load limit for the size in use.
- Check that the pin remains screwed fully home before use, and re-tighten if it has worked loose.
- Inspect the shackle before each use for wear, corrosion damage or a bent or distorted bow, and do not use it if the pin will not screw fully home.
