Heavy Duty Gold Galvanised Tee Hinges for Doors, Gates & Sheds

Overview
Heavy duty Tee hinges in a gold, yellow-passivated zinc galvanised finish, built to give a strong, long-lasting pivot point for doors, gates, flaps, lids and crates wherever a warm gold tone is preferred over a plain silver hinge. The Tee (or "T") profile is a long-established hinge pattern precisely because it copes well with an off-centre load, the weight of a door or gate leaf pulling down and outward from the frame, rather than a load applied evenly along a straight edge.
Each hinge is pressed from steel plate in the traditional "Tee" (T) profile: a narrow rectangular leaf is paired with a longer, tapering strap leaf around a central knuckle pivot. This asymmetric shape is the hinge's defining mechanical feature: the strap leaf spreads the fixing load along its full length rather than concentrating it at one point, which is what allows the same basic design to work equally well on small cabinet-scale doors and on wide, heavy-set gates. The two leaves swing freely on the central knuckle pin, giving a smooth, controlled opening and closing action once fitted.
The zinc coating is applied to a thickness of around 12µm (0.0005in), with a yellow chromate passivation layer over the top that both produces the gold colour and adds a further, self-healing layer of corrosion resistance on top of the base zinc. This makes the hinge suitable for external use on gates, sheds and outbuildings.
Key Features
- Heavy duty steel construction pressed in the traditional "Tee" (T) profile, a narrow rectangular leaf paired with a longer, tapering strap leaf around a central knuckle pivot.
- Gold, yellow-passivated zinc galvanised finish, giving a warm gold tone as an alternative to a plain silver hinge.
- Around 12µm (0.0005in) zinc coating thickness, with a yellow chromate passivation layer adding a further, self-healing layer of corrosion resistance.
- Suitable for external use on gates, sheds and outbuildings.
- Available in three sizes: 100mm (3.94in), 125mm (4.92in) and 200mm (7.87in) overall length, to suit everything from cabinet-scale doors up to full-size gates.
- Material thickness increases with size: 2.0mm (0.08in) gauge on the 100mm and 125mm sizes, stepping up to 2.5mm (0.10in) on the larger 200mm size for extra strength on heavier leaves.
- Lightweight but strong: from around 90g (0.20lb) on the smallest hinge up to 350g (0.77lb) on the largest.
- Strap-leaf design spreads the fixing load along its full length, so the same hinge profile suits both light cabinet-scale work and wider, heavier-set gates and doors.
Specification
| Size | Overall length (A) | Width (B) | Leaf length (C) | Material thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100mm | 100mm (3.94in) | 30mm (1.18in) | 65mm (2.56in) | 2.0mm (0.08in) |
| 125mm | 125mm (4.92in) | 35mm (1.38in) | 80mm (3.15in) | 2.0mm (0.08in) |
| 200mm | 200mm (7.87in) | 50mm (1.97in) | 110mm (4.33in) | 2.5mm (0.10in) |
Weight ranges from around 90g (0.20lb) for the smallest hinge up to 350g (0.77lb) for the largest, increasing with both overall size and the thicker 2.5mm gauge used on the 200mm size.
Typical Applications
- Garden and paddock gates: the 125mm and 200mm sizes, fitted in pairs (or threes on taller or heavier gates), give a pivot strong enough to carry a full-size gate leaf.
- Shed and outbuilding doors, where a corrosion-resistant hinge that can stand up to the weather is needed.
- Stable and barn doors, where the long strap leaf and central knuckle pivot suit a wide door leaf.
- Storage crates and chests, and cabinet doors and lids, where the smaller 100mm size gives a neat, cabinet-scale fixing.
- Animal pens and enclosures.
- General agricultural, equestrian and DIY fabrication work wherever a strong, corrosion-resistant, gold-finish hinge is preferred over a plain silver one.
Installation Guidance
The narrow rectangular leaf fixes to the frame, post or wall, and the longer, tapering strap leaf fixes to the door, gate or lid, with the two leaves pivoting on the central knuckle pin. Fixing holes are provided in both leaves; fix through these using screws, coach screws or bolts sized to suit the material being fixed into (timber, block or steel framing), and choose a fixing long and strong enough to carry the full weight of the door or gate leaf in use. Keeping both leaves square to the frame and door as they are fixed will help the hinge pivot smoothly once the full weight of the leaf is hanging on it.
Match the hinge size to the size and weight of what is being hung: the 100mm size suits light doors, flaps and cabinet-scale gates; the 125mm size suits garden gates and shed doors; and the 200mm size suits larger, heavier gates and outbuilding doors. Heavier or taller leaves are best hung on a pair of hinges as a minimum, moving to three hinges per leaf where the extra weight or height calls for it.
