Overview

Bright zinc plated steel U-shaped fencing staples, also known as wire staples or U-nails, for fixing wire, mesh, netting and barbed wire to timber fence posts, in three sizes from 25mm x 2.5mm up to heavy-duty 35mm x 3.5mm. Each staple is formed as a single U-bend: the two legs straddle the wire and are driven straight into the wood, holding it firmly against the post face. There’s no pilot hole to drill, no separate clip, and no bracket to fit, just one component doing the whole job.

Every staple is formed from steel wire and finished in bright zinc plating for reliable corrosion resistance in everyday outdoor and garden use. Fence posts spend their working life exposed to rain, damp ground and UV, so a durable plated finish matters; it helps the staples resist rust rather than corroding and losing their grip on the wire over time. The shank is plain (no barbs) and both legs taper to a sharp point, so the staple drives cleanly into softwood and hardwood posts alike without splitting the timber. The range covers three sizes, each matched by leg length and wire diameter to a different weight of wire and fencing job, from light garden netting up to heavier field and stock fencing.

Key Features

  • Three matched sizes: 25mm x 2.5mm, 30mm x 3.0mm and 35mm x 3.5mm (leg length x wire diameter), so you can pair the staple to the gauge of wire being fixed rather than fitting one size to every job.
  • Bright zinc plated steel: a smooth, silvery finish giving good general corrosion resistance for typical garden, allotment and agricultural fencing.
  • Plain shank, no barbs: drives cleanly into timber with minimal risk of splitting the post.
  • Sharp, tapered point on both legs: easy to drive with a hammer into softwood and hardwood posts alike.
  • U-bend profile: sized to sit over wire and mesh without crimping or cutting into it.
  • Single-fix design: no pilot hole, clip or bracket needed; the staple is driven straight into the post and does the whole job on its own.

Specification

Sizes are given as leg length x wire diameter:

  • 25mm x 2.5mm (0.98 x 0.10in): best for light-duty jobs: poultry netting, chicken wire, garden mesh and landscape fabric.
  • 30mm x 3.0mm (1.18 x 0.12in): a versatile all-purpose size for standard field fencing, welded wire mesh and general garden or farm repairs.
  • 35mm x 3.5mm (1.38 x 0.14in): for heavier-duty jobs: high-tensile and barbed wire, and driving into dense or hardwood posts.

Typical Applications

Because the three sizes between them span light netting through to heavy-tensile and barbed wire, these staples cover most timber-post fencing jobs around the garden, allotment or smallholding:

  • Poultry netting and chicken wire for runs, coops and enclosures
  • Garden mesh, trellis and landscape fabric fixed to posts and stakes
  • Standard field fencing and welded wire mesh panels
  • General repairs where an existing fence wire has worked loose from a post
  • High-tensile and barbed wire on field and stock fencing
  • Both softwood and hardwood posts, thanks to the sharp tapered point on both legs
  • Mixed fence runs, where finer mesh sections call for a smaller staple and heavier wire or barbed strands elsewhere on the same run call for a larger one

Installation Guidance

Position the staple so the two legs straddle the wire, mesh or netting, then drive it squarely into the face of the post until the U-bend sits snugly over the wire. The plain shank and tapered points are designed to go in cleanly with a standard hammer, without the need to pre-drill.

Match the staple size to the wire wherever possible: the three sizes are there so you can pick the closest match for the wire and post in hand.

Tip: for wire that needs to move slightly with seasonal expansion and contraction (high-tensile or woven wire fencing in particular), avoid hammering the staple fully flush. Leave a small gap so the wire can move freely and the fence braces can do their job, rather than the staples taking the strain.

Common Questions

Which size do I need?
25mm x 2.5mm for light netting, poultry and chicken wire and garden mesh; 30mm x 3.0mm for general field fencing and welded wire mesh; 35mm x 3.5mm for high-tensile and barbed wire, hardwood posts and heavier-duty jobs.

Do I need to pre-drill the post?
No. The plain shank and tapered points are designed to go in cleanly with a standard hammer, without the need to pre-drill.

Will they go into hardwood posts?
Yes. The sharp, tapered point on both legs drives into softwood and hardwood posts alike.

What does bright zinc plated (BZP) mean?
The steel staples are finished in bright zinc plating: a smooth, silvery finish giving good general corrosion resistance for typical garden, allotment and agricultural fencing.

What pack sizes are available?
Every size comes in packs of 20, 100, 300, 500 or 1000 staples.
