Overview

DIYUK cavity wall fixings for plasterboard: threaded 6 x 24.5mm ABS plastic wall anchors that give plasterboard, gypsum board and aerated concrete a genuinely solid fixing point. Each hollow wall anchor has a coarse, deep-pitched external thread along its body and is driven into the board with an ordinary cross-point (Pozi/Phillips-compatible) screwdriver. It is an expansion anchor designed for fixing into drywall, aerated concrete and gypsum, and these plasterboard fixings are used for shelves, cabinets, electrical fittings, bathroom fittings, mirrors and pictures.

The anchor body is moulded in sturdy ABS plastic for long-lasting performance and resistance to corrosion. Once the anchor is driven home flush with the wall surface, a standard wood or metal fixing screw is driven into the anchor's own moulded pilot bore to complete the fixing and secure whatever is being mounted.

These plasterboard plugs come in a single, fixed size (6.0mm shank diameter by 24.5mm length), so there is no size selection to make; every anchor from this listing is identical, and the full specification is set out below. Choose a pack of 4, 10, 20, 50 or 100 to match the job.

Easy Installation

Installing the anchor is usually straightforward and needs only basic tools: drill, drive the anchor, then fix.

Typical Applications

As cavity fixings, hollow wall fixings and drywall fixings for stud and partition walls, these anchors suit jobs such as:

  • Fixing shelving brackets, coat hooks, curtain track and light cabinets to plasterboard partition walls
  • Mounting electrical back boxes, socket surrounds and light fittings on stud walls
  • Securing sanitary ware and bathroom fittings (towel rails, soap dishes, small cabinets) to plasterboard and tile-on-board surfaces
  • Hanging mirrors, picture frames and other decorative or finishing fixtures
  • General DIY and light commercial fit-out work in drywall, gypsum board and aerated block partitions

Installation & Fitting Guidance

  1. Before drilling, check for hidden pipework and cabling behind the fixing point with a suitable cable/pipe detector, particularly close to switches, sockets and skirting boards.
  2. Mark the fixing point and drill a pilot hole, keeping the drill square to the wall surface.
  3. Drive the anchor into the pilot hole using a cross-point (Pozi/Phillips) screwdriver until the head sits flush with the wall surface. Avoid overtightening: forcing the head past flush can strip the thread in soft board.
  4. Position the item to be fixed over the installed anchor.
  5. Drive a wood or metal fixing screw through the fixture and into the anchor's pilot bore to complete the fixing.
  6. For heavier fittings, or where the load will be repeatedly stressed (a towel rail, a curtain track), spread the load across two or more anchors rather than relying on a single fixing point.

Removal and Making Good

Where an anchor needs to come out (a shelf is being repositioned, or a fitting is being replaced), back the fixing screw out first, then unscrew the anchor itself with the same cross-point screwdriver used to fit it, turning it anti-clockwise. If the anchor spins without withdrawing, grip it gently with pliers close to the wall face while turning. Any resulting hole is small enough to fill with standard plasterboard filler ready for redecoration.

Common Questions

Which walls can I use them on?
Plasterboard (drywall), gypsum board and aerated concrete block. Each cavity anchor is a plaster board wall fixing and a drywall anchor in one, so the same cavity fixing covers all three base materials.

What size are they?
One size: 6.0mm diameter and 24.5mm long. As a 6mm wall anchor in a single size, there is nothing to choose: every anchor in the pack is identical.

Do I need special tools?
No. Installation needs only basic tools: drill a pilot hole, drive the anchor in with a cross-point screwdriver until the head sits flush, then fix.

Are screws included?
No. The anchors are supplied on their own; fix with a wood or metal screw driven through the fixture into the anchor's pilot bore.

What pack sizes are available?
Packs of 4, 10, 20, 50 or 100, so the same wall plugs cover a single shelf or a full fit-out.
