PVC Coated Galvanised Steel Wire Rope

Galvanised steel wire rope with a PVC outer coating, combining the strength of a steel cable core with a protective, non-abrasive plastic outer layer. It's built as a 6×7 FC (fibre core) construction to DIN 3055 - six strands of wire laid around a flexible fibre core - and is supplied across five diameters, from 3mm (0.12") up to 8mm (0.31"), in cut lengths from 1m up to 100m to suit anything from a single garden repair to a full continuous run. It's flexible, weatherproof and corrosion-resistant by design.

The fibre-core construction gives flexibility and easier handling, so this rope coils and routes around posts and fixings more readily than a stiffer steel-cored cable of the same diameter. Before coating, the steel core itself is galvanised for corrosion resistance, and the PVC outer layer then adds a further weatherproof barrier on top of that, along with a smoother, more comfortable handling surface than bare wire rope. The PVC layer also stops the cable scratching or marking any surface it rests against or is wrapped around, which matters as much for a washing line as it does for a garden feature in view of the house.

Each diameter is simply the steel core plus its PVC layer, and the two scale together as the rope gets larger: the 3mm, 4mm and 5mm ropes are all built on a 1mm PVC layer over a progressively thicker core, while the 6mm and 8mm ropes step up to a 2mm PVC layer over a thicker core again - so the larger the diameter, the thicker both the core and the coating, and the higher the working load the rope carries.

As a general guide, the smaller 3mm and 4mm diameters suit lighter-duty tasks such as clothesline and garden rigging work, while the 6mm and 8mm diameters, with their thicker steel core, suit the heavier tie-down and site work described above - matching the diameter to the job follows directly from the higher working load that the thicker core diameters carry.

Cutting & Handling

When cutting to length, seal or tape the cut ends first, before cutting through the PVC coating - this stops the strands underneath unravelling once the coating that holds them together is cut through. Cut cleanly with a proper wire rope cutter or an angle grinder rather than side cutters where possible, for a tidier, less frayed end on both the core and the coating.
